Postpartum shedding: when should I ask for help?
Summerview Hair Loss Clinic · Published October 17, 2026
The short answer
Shedding after pregnancy is often temporary. The American Academy of Dermatology says it commonly peaks around four months after birth, with normal fullness returning by the child’s first birthday for most women. If fullness has not returned by a year, an assessment can help check for another cause.
A change in shedding can appear months later.
Note timing, symptoms and feeding plans.
A consultation does not commit you to treatment.
Do I need to wait a year to ask?
You can discuss concerns sooner. Explain the timing and any other scalp or health symptoms to a physician. The usual postpartum pattern describes many people; it cannot confirm the cause of your own shedding.
Does postpartum shedding mean I need PRP?
No. Temporary shedding does not automatically call for an injection course. Ask what the physician thinks is happening and whether treatment is appropriate. Mention breastfeeding, pregnancy plans, medications and supplements before discussing options.
What can I prepare for a local consultation?
Bring your health card and a short timeline of the change. Summerview’s free initial physician consultation takes place at its Newmarket clinic. If you already receive care elsewhere, explain the advice or treatments you have been given.
